Jeffrey’s attitude toward “where we’re from”
1. Since we’re here already, there’s no need to ask “why” because it’s too late anyway.
2. I’m here and this is my life. I wanna live a meaningful life as I want to live it using my own style, in this life time.
3. He quoted the 14 “undeclared questions” in the āgama that a set of common philosophical questions that Buddha refused to answer. Such as “Is the world eternal? Or not? Does Buddha exist after death? Or not?
4. Buddha refused to answer those kind of questions but got a metaphor. A person got shot by a poisonous arrow. When people tried to save his life, he stopped them. He wanted the answers before being treated for his life. What kind of poison was used on the arrow head. What materials the arrow was made of. Why he was shot… Of course you guess the result right? He died without the answers. The point is, we’d also be long gone before finding and being satisfied with the answers.
5. Jeffrey considers a person’s life as a piece of canvas. It’s yours and you get to decide what to draw and how to paint it.

Jeffrey also invited us to consider the followings
1. The so called ideal or ambition in our mind, is it ours? Or is it from someone else?
2. When we don’t agree with the ambition or goals of other people, how can we find our own?
3. He shared the suggestion from Zen, a school of Mahayana Buddhism.  Doubt. Doubt what we read or are told. Find what we can accept that coincides with our inner voice and value. Then we can bring that belief to full play and develop the ideal of our own.
4. He used the 4 sufferings “being born, aging, getting sick, and death” as an example. In this modern world with the advanced medical development, are the 4 sufferings remain truth as they were in 2,000 years ago?
5. So how do we modify it when needed I asked him. He suggested that we hold on to the marrow of whichever argument that philosophy is and examine how it works in the present time. For example, “rid of the suffering and gain the happiness”

Jeffrey’s view toward “Origin of Human Being”
1. Dao, God, the Absolute, Truth, the Only, and the Nature are all the same as in the ontology. It’s like the story we once shared about several blind people feeling out an elephant. Put every part each blind touched together and we’d get the whole elephant.
2. It’s not in the sky or in any part of the world far away. It’s in our mind, inside us. Since it’s inside us, we would be able to get beyond it.
3. As how to transcend it, “tolerate” is the word Jeffrey used. Enlarge our heart. Let us surpass the difference of the peoples, cultures, and religions.
4. All of us consist of the buddha-nature. Bring the body, the heart, and the mind together. Heaven is inside us. Do what Buddha would do. Voice what Buddha would speak. Think Buddha would think. And that make us a buddha.

Suggestions from Jeffrey to people interested in philosophy and/or religions
1. Be yourself. Pursue what inspires you. Enlarge your heart. And you’re not afar from Dao.
2. Allow the difference. Elevate your own cultivation as suggested in the Perfection of Wisdom and love from Bible.

Imagining (vikalpa)
<< Online Post Sharing I >>

To get along with other people, we need to adjust ourselves and to forget about “me”. If the so called “cooperation” is a one-way street and only comes from others, there is no way to create a harmonious relationship. We need to cultivate ourselves to a decent level first. Only then can we make a difference. There are always people better than us. So do not look down on any one. Instead, consider everyone more superior and show our respect. Treat ourselves as the common folks and others the saints and sages. Discipline ourselves before trying to find faults in others. Examine how well our cultivation has been before looking at other people’s direction. Those who are judgmental or opinionated are the ones imaging the difference between themselves and others. And that is the sources of their pain and suffering.
(Translation of “Wisdom Words from JiGong Living Buddha” from Chinese)

Respecting Others
<< Online Post Sharing II >>
Everyone is equal to the next. There is no difference between those whose job positions aren’t the same. There is no difference between the zeros on the paychecks. Their professions and bank accounts maybe different but their human dignity remains the same.
That said, a person who shows respect to others is more than likely to earn respect from others too. Do not make light of others or consider anyone beneath your notice. A humble character is your relationship pass with others. (Translation of “22 habits and traits of world’s richest people, #6” from Chinese)

Shooting arrows is beneficial to the physical impaired in many ways
1. On the social level: it makes one walk out of the home and interact with others. The participants can still maintain some degrees of privacy since archery is kind of a personal sport too.
2. On the physical level: it gets one to exercise and build muscles that shame others.
3. On the mental level: it increases one’s steadiness in the mind. It’d be good too if the archer is religious or does meditation as a habit.
It requires self-awareness and discipline to improve oneself if he wants to compete in games.

Suggestions from Coach Hsu to archers
1. Protect yourself from injury. Practice three days and rest one to give your muscles a break and reduce the chance of pulling any muscle or worse injuries.
2. Challenge yourself but remember shooting arrows is fun. Find the passion. Enjoy the sport.
3. New archers are welcome to use the equipment provided by the Association. But when one is more advanced and needs to purchase his own. Be prepared for that expense.

Approval & Encouragement

<<Online Post Sharing I>>

What the world would be like if no one has the mindset of encouraging or helping out one another? If friends only meet to gossip about other people, or to complain about life and unhappy matters, then the world would indeed like a living hell!

What if though, we all present to others our joyfulness? The world will then bathe in a heaven-like atmosphere.

Approve of others and encourage them when you can. It is also an approval of yourself. If one is in the habit of denying other people, it could be for lack of self-confidence. He does not reflect and examine his heart and mind, and sees only faults of others.
(Translation of “Wisdom Words from JiGong Living Buddha” from Chinese)

Help Others Succeed As Much As You Can

<< Online Post Sharing II >>

To help others, you need to have the mentality of giving. You need to show your kindness. You also need to be able to help. The fundamental nature of social intercourse is to continuously, in various forms, assist other people to succeed. Such as sharing your knowledge and resources, time and energy, friendship and affections, and providing value to others. You must know and remember this: helping others is in fact helping yourself. You’ll be happier and made more friends. You’ll receive more friendship, affections, and tolerance in return.

There is a Chinese phrase, The direct translation would be “take the fame and financial gains lightly.” It’s not that we cannot have them, but that you don’t see them as necessities to make us happy or satisfied. If we can let go of the temptations of getting them and worries of not able to get them, we’d be happier. We’d have a solid and real life and see things objectively. We’d not become the slaves of fame and money who have less and less happiness in life. Share with you today is the partial notes I have from a temple class.

What is a person? What is the purpose of living?

  1. A person: when one’s a person, he’s not a ghost. The difference between the two is time and space.
  2. Simply put it, a life is when one is born till his death. How this period of time is spent is the million dollar question. Should it only be the four sufferings of getting born, aging, sick, and then death?
  3. The purpose of living, in a Dao perspective, is to correct the bad hobbies or wrong doings in the passage of our past lives. We are to recover our true selves, which is the Buddha inside each of us. Do good deeds and show kindness and love to one another. The result would be world peace, the kingdom of Buddha on earth.

Build an unordinary life by being an ordinary person

  • Are most of us ordinary? Yes!
  • Do we miss many opportunities for being unordinary? Yes!
  • Is building an unordinary life impossible? No!

Being unordinary comes from being ordinary. We do what need to be done. Be healthy. Take care of our family. Get our work done well…... You name it. The trick is to cultivate and play each role well. Here are some tips:

  1. Set a goal

To be determined: Reap what you sew. Here’s a quote from our temple: Determined to be a saint or sage and should you be. Determined to be a Buddha and should we be. Determined to be ordinary and should we be. We become what we determine to be.

  1. Build our confidence
    • Belief: the source of our motivation, our powerhouse. Appreciate everything. Be thankful for whatever help from a family member, a stranger, or the saints and sages.
    • Support Group: be with friends and learn from each other
    • Positive thoughts: Every setback, test, and strikeout is there to help us grow stronger.
  2. Put it into action
    • Being unordinary is the result of our deeds, not of our words or thoughts. Take action.
    • The three ways of giving: charity, the virtue of generosity
      • the financial support
      • the oral sharing and teaching
      • the time and labor

Four types of persons

  1. A failure: a person who does nothing
  2. The ordinary: a person who does a little
  3. A success: a person who does more than a little
  4. An unordinary: a person who does much more than a little

Chapter 12 in Laozi Tao Te Ching* (Dao De Jing)

The hues of the five colors blind us from seeing other colors

The five music notes make us deaf from hearing other sounds

The five flavors spoil our taste buds and deprive our mouth of taste

Riding freely in the field makes our mind wild

The rare and strange goods make us desire for them

(The repression of the desires)

Colour's five hues from the eyes their sight will take;

Music's five notes the ears as deaf can make;

The flavours five deprive the mouth of taste;

The chariot course, and the wild hunting waste

Make mad the mind; and objects rare and strange,

Sought for, men's conduct will to evil change.

Therefore the sage seeks to satisfy (the craving of) the belly, and not the (insatiable longing of the) eyes. He puts from him the latter, and prefers to seek the former.

The world is full of material distractions. We often neglect the need of our mind and soul because of those. We see only the item, not the quality. The material need is satisfied but our being is not.  Correct this when it’s not too late.

When seeing the world from a perspective other than grabbing more power, gaining a higher social status, earning more money, or wanting others to do things our way, we’d find it open up to more opportunities and potentials for us. Let’s go and create our own good fortune and destiny.

  1. Reflect on ourselves often for any wrongdoings. Do not gossip about faults of others. Stay joyful and appreciate our luck every single moment.
  2. Miss no chance to do good deeds even if they are small. Do no wrong even if it’s a tiny one.
  3. Every single day is the beginning of practicing humanity. Every single moment is good for reminding ourselves on that.
  4. Smiles are more appealing than frowns. Discussions are more natural than scowls.
  5. Eliminate the greed and be content with simplicity. Your mind would be blessed with peace and freedom.
  6. Seeking luck and longevity is not as good as being safe and well. Being safe and well is to add luck and longevity to your life.
  7. The most ordinary people are the richest ones.
  8. It’s the best to have a conscious mind. It’s the happiest thing to be able to give, provide assistance, and help the needed.
  9. Be more tolerance when dealing with others. Give them more love. If you’re able to do both, a happier life would be yours to enjoy.
  10. Who is the luckiest? The one who can forgive and have mercy on all beings in the world.
  11. Who that respects himself has more courage to reduce his self-importance.
  12. Step back and allow others more space so to help them accomplish their goals. It’s a personal accomplishment and cultivation.
  13. Our facial expression and acts. The way we talk and behave. They are learned and earned by educating ourselves and enduring contemptibility in our daily life.
  14. No matter how many obstacles there are in the journey, they can be overcome. No matter how difficult the tasks are, they can be done. This is how we learn and elevate our moral character.
  15. Every second counts when it comes to doing good deeds.
  16. Do not look down on anyone especially yourself because all us have endless potentials.
  17. Everything starts from a seed called determination.
  18. If we cannot seize the predestined relationship, no matter how great an opportunity and luck is, it would slip away from us.
  19. When a heart is true, there is good fortune. When there is a will, there is help.
  20. Penitence is the confession of the soul. It’s equivalent to the spring cleaning of the soiled mind.
  21. An individual always showing gratitude is less likely trapped in a difficult position for long.
  22. Keep our heart like a bright moon which appears when there is water. Keep our heart like the sky that appears when the clouds are gone.
  23. A heart without evil and a mind without vicious thoughts often feel at ease. A sincere and honest soul is free from the wicked.
  24. Being able to give is not a privilege to the financially secured people. Instead, it’s the devotion of love.
  25. There are always people less fortunate than us. It’s a blessing to be able to serve others.

What To Choose, Career Or Family?

  1. Established a home décor factory in China. Managed the factory alone and being separated from his family.
  2. Lost the opportunity to be with his kids and to witness their growth. Too bad there is no pill can cure regret.
  3. More than a decade had passed and Jeffrey grew older. Neither of the kids wanted to inherit his business. He had to sell it and spent 3 to 4 years to get the transfer task done.

Retirement? Oh My God…

  1. Knowing it coming 4 years prior to his retirement did not prepare Jeffrey for his retirement.
  2. Jeffrey felt lost and out of his element. It seemed his personal value was gone.
  3. He stayed underfoot of his beloved wife who needed to get use to his being home full time too.
  4. They spent some months traveling to places
  5. Jeffrey returned to school and pursued a master degree in Buddhism which had been his passion since college.

Suggestions For People Who Might Be Retired within Several Years

  1. Made a plan to buy your own place when young if possible. With your own place, you won’t need to worry about paying rent when there’s no income.
  2. Plan your retirement well. Search healthy hobbies and interests to occupy your extra time.
  3. You must have some passive income, such as monthly or rent income. Leave your savings to emergency or planned expenses.
  4. Unless you’re really well off financially, it might be better giving your children the opportunity to build their own career. Keep the savings for yourself and the spouse and enjoy a relaxed retirement.
  5. Be careful about your investment. Jeffrey doesn’t suggest the stock market because it’s highly risky.
  6. Fulfill the need for your soul and mind, such as philosophy and religions. Find a way to elevate your being.
